The De-Stress with Your Pet Day was much appreciated by many who attended. In the month since then, several people have said what a difference it has made to have daily routines to de-stress - as long as they do not stress when they miss it! Many people stress about how to feed their pets and to recognize clues of ill health, so we did great demonstrations of both. I have covered and will continue to cover
those issues here.
The key to stress free feeding is to be mindful about the entire process.
Every Sunday is a meditation at SamaDog.

Now, Ayurveda!!
We talk a lot here about homeopathy and some about Chinese medicine, so now learn a bit more about one of the oldest medicines and life styles on our planet - Ayurveda.
- Mary Thompson started the June weekly Holistic Actions webinar series by giving us an insightful introduction into Ayurveda. Mary presented the principles of Ayurveda and how to apply them to our pets' lives.
She helped us connect with the reality that our pets have a mind/body complex which determines the state of their health - these are called Doshas. As their humans, making good choices for our pets that align with their natural rhythms is foundational. Ayurveda helps us understand more deeply these natural rhythms.
The three doshas are vatta, pitta and kapha. Most dogs are pitta.
- Amanda Ree of Sama Dog then spoke at the about feeding our pets Ayurvedically.
As with our own diets, there are some important characteristics to consider. Is the food: fresh, colorful, flavorful, seasonal, and minimally processed or close to the source?
Amanda gave us super beneficial tips on using our pets' doshas to address imbalances, and how to use nutrition to correct those imbalances.
- To discover your pet's dosha, take this quiz. You will then get a few emails talking about what to feed, etc, for each of the doshas. Since many individuals are a combination of doshas, or you have more than one in your home, each email covers all 3.
- There is one birth dosha, but it can change over time, so it is good to do the quiz twice. Once for when your companion was the healthiest and second for how they are now.
Some Ayurvdic food tips (remember every cat or dog still will have unique needs):
- Vatta have low digestive fire, so may need warmed food. Add hot water to the raw; predigest by pureeing vegetables or lightly sear the outside of the meats. Eggs, chicken, cumin and black pepper
- Pitta are fine with raw, cool and some even like to eat frozen chunks. Apples, cucumbers - cooling foods. Chicken, dairy.
- Kapha - Can eat raw or cooked. Tend to be overweight, so monitor quantity. Like to eat slowly, so maybe feed by themselves so they have the time they need to eat. Seasonal veges a excellent for them.
That's enough for now.
